Is CBD safe for children?

Many of our customers successfully give their children CBD oil. However, some still have concerns or questions about the safety of CBD for children. This means that despite countless positive experiences, a few things need to be considered and potential side effects should not be ignored.

Although research in this area is still quite new, we have compiled the most important findings on the use of CBD in children to answer open questions on this topic.

First, it should be noted that the World Health Organization classifies CBD as safe and well-tolerated, and there is no evidence of health problems associated with the use of pure CBD.

Furthermore, the WHO found that clinical studies showed the effectiveness of CBD in epilepsy. Children suffering from Dravet syndrome (a form of epilepsy) have also successfully been administered CBD as part of such a study. Studies with CBD in children have also been conducted for ADHD and autism, with the latter also showing great potential.

How CBD works in children

But how does CBD affect children's bodies? To understand how CBD works, we should take a look at the endocannabinoid system in our bodies, which is part of the human nervous system. Incidentally, all other mammals also have this system, which regulates various processes in the body. It is a network of neurotransmitters, CB1 and CB2 receptors, which have a great influence on the biological functions of our organism.

The endocannabinoid system is said to play an important role in regulating sleep, relaxation, and pain perception. The CB1 receptors are mainly present in the brain and, for example, influence our memory, coordination, emotions, and appetite. The CB2 receptors are mainly found in the immune system and are often associated with pain and inflammation.

When taking CBD, it interacts with the receptors, thereby supporting the functionality and performance of our organism. The body itself produces cannabinoids, so-called endocannabinoids, but it can be supported by an external supply of phytocannabinoids like CBD. The exact effect of CBD on children's bodies still needs to be further researched.

However, it can be stated that the same CBD products are suitable for children as for adults. Since children weigh significantly less, the dosage must of course be adjusted accordingly to their body weight. Since every body reacts differently to CBD, it is best to start with a low dose. The dosage can then be increased if necessary until the desired effect occurs.

Which CBD product is right for my child?

In Germany, there is no age restriction for the use of CBD. However, as a company, we do not want to recommend the use of CBD for individuals under 18 years of age, as the scientific evidence in this area is not yet sufficient.

However, if you want to give CBD to your child, it is essential to pay attention to what kind of CBD product you administer, because not all CBD is the same. Unfortunately, there are many CBD products on the market that have not been sufficiently regulated and therefore sometimes do not meet the prescribed quality and safety standards. Therefore, it should be ensured that the products have been tested by independent laboratories and are made from certified industrial hemp.

The CBD products from Hanfgeflüster comply with all regulations and safety standards and can be used without hesitation. The range includes CBD oils in various concentrations, which are mainly used internally, as well as topical products for external use. A suitable product is therefore always available for the most diverse needs.

Our CBD oils are particularly popular because they are easy to dose and the intake for children is more pleasant than, for example, capsules. In addition, the oil can be diluted with water or juice or administered together with fatty foods to facilitate absorption.

CBD application in children

The question now is when the use of CBD in children is even sensible. Parents who have previously unsuccessfully treated their child with medication for diseases such as ADHD, epilepsy or autism, for example, could resort to CBD.

CBD can also be an interesting option for children with anxiety or increased stress. This is because stress due to performance pressure or social pressure is unfortunately no longer uncommon in children today. This in turn can lead to sleep problems, which only further intensify the feeling of stress. Due to its calming properties, CBD could sustainably reduce anxiety and feelings of tension.

Studies in which CBD has been investigated in relation to sleep problems have already shown great potential here. But CBD could also be a helpful support for children with other symptoms and clinical pictures that also occur in adults.

Side effects of CBD

As already described, CBD is generally very well tolerated and has few side effects compared to many medications. In individual cases, however, complaints can still occur. Known side effects include dry mouth, low blood pressure, drowsiness and a reduced appetite. Find out more in our blog article about the potential side effects of CBD and how to avoid them.

Conclusion

To draw a conclusive summary and make more meaningful statements, the scientific evidence is currently not sufficient, which is why further research is needed here. However, many anecdotal reports speak for themselves: customers regularly report positive experiences and successes with CBD, both for themselves and their children, in alleviating various ailments. Due to the still rather sparse research and because we want to treat the topic of children with particular caution, we do not make a direct recommendation from our side to use CBD for those under 18 and are eagerly awaiting further promising insights and research results.
