What is the Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect describes the synergistic interaction of the various compounds in cannabis, including cannabinoids (such as CBD and THC) and terpenes. Simply put, the plant as a whole achieves a better effect than the isolated components alone.

What ingredients does the hemp plant contain?

The hemp plant contains a variety of ingredients, including:

  1. Cannabinoids: Hemp contains more than 100 different cannabinoids, including the most well-known such as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). Other cannabinoids include Cannabinol (CBN), Cannabigerol (CBG), Cannabichromene (CBC), and Cannabidivarin (CBDV). Each cannabinoid has potentially different effects on the body.

  2. Terpenes: Terpenes are aromatic compounds responsible for the characteristic smell and taste of the hemp plant. They are also found in many other plants. Terpenes such as myrcene, limonene, pinene, and caryophyllene can also have therapeutic effects and contribute to the entourage effect. If you want to learn more about terpenes, you can visit our blog article on terpenes.

  3. Flavonoids: Flavonoids are a large class of bioactive compounds found in many plants, including hemp. They are responsible for the color of many flowers and have potentially antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  4. Phenolic acids: Hemp also contains various phenolic acids such as ferulic acid and caffeic acid, which can also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

  5. Fats and lipids: Hemp seeds and hemp oil contain healthy fats such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are important for a balanced diet.

These ingredients vary in their composition and concentration depending on the hemp strain and growing conditions. The combination and interaction of these ingredients are responsible for the overall effect of hemp products and the entourage effect.

Why does the hemp plant as a whole work better than its isolated components alone?

The entourage effect allows the ingredients to enhance each other and modulate their effects. For example, CBD can mitigate the psychoactive effects of THC while creating synergistic therapeutic effects. The various cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds work together to create a complex and diverse interplay that allows for a wider range of effects.

How can I ensure I get a CBD oil with the entourage effect?

One generally distinguishes between full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and mono-spectrum CBD oils. The difference between the three types in terms of the entourage effect lies in the composition of the compounds they contain.

  • Full-spectrum CBD oil contains the full spectrum of natural cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds found in the hemp plant, including THC (usually below the legal limit of 0.2% in most countries). The entourage effect fully occurs here, as all ingredients work together and can create synergistic effects.

  • Broad-spectrum CBD oil also contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids and other compounds of the hemp plant, but completely without THC. Due to the absence of THC, the entourage effect is still present, but somewhat weaker than with full-spectrum CBD oils. Nevertheless, the other ingredients can still create synergistic effects and support the entourage effect in terms of therapeutic benefits.

  • Mono-spectrum CBD oil (CBD isolate) consists exclusively of isolated CBD and contains no other cannabinoids or compounds. Since there are no other ingredients, the entourage effect is absent in terms of interaction with other compounds. It focuses exclusively on the effect of CBD alone.

Overall, full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oils have the potential for a stronger entourage effect due to the presence of a wide range of compounds, leading to a more comprehensive effect. Mono-spectrum CBD oil, which only contains CBD, on the other hand, offers no entourage effect in terms of synergistic interaction with other compounds. We have therefore decided to offer exclusively full-spectrum CBD oils that provide the complete entourage effect.

Caution with CBD oils for animals

Some animals can tolerate CBD oil with the entourage effect, which means CBD oil from full-spectrum hemp extracts. In fact, some pet owners have had positive experiences with using full-spectrum CBD oils where the entourage effect plays a role. The entourage effect can also help animals achieve a wider range of therapeutic effects and increase the potential for improved efficacy.

Nevertheless, it is important to note that every animal is an individual and may react differently to CBD products. Some animals may be more sensitive to certain ingredients, and it is possible that they may not tolerate the entourage effect well.

Cats, in particular, do not tolerate oils that contain terpenes. Their metabolism processes full-spectrum CBD oils too slowly and can excrete them only with great difficulty, which can then lead to poisoning! We have therefore decided to produce our CBD oil for animals completely without terpenes.

Conclusion - The Entourage Effect and CBD

The entourage effect describes the synergistic interaction of the various compounds in the hemp plant, including cannabinoids - such as CBD and THC - as well as terpenes, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and fats. The entourage effect therefore states that the hemp plant as a whole works better than its isolated components alone.

To ensure you get a CBD oil with the entourage effect, you can choose between full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oils. Full-spectrum CBD oil contains the full spectrum of natural compounds, including THC. Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains the full spectrum, but without THC, which slightly weakens the entourage effect. Mono-spectrum CBD oil consists exclusively of isolated CBD and thus offers no entourage effect at all.

Caution is advised with CBD oils for animals, especially cats. Cats can be more sensitive to certain ingredients, especially terpenes. A CBD oil for animals without terpenes and with low or no THC content is therefore a safer choice.
