Are you wondering if you're allowed to drive after taking CBD or if your driver's license is at risk should you be subjected to a drug test? It's normal for CBD newcomers to have a lot of questions about the CBD active ingredient.

One question that has been coming up repeatedly lately is: "Can you drive with CBD?". On the surface, one might think that CBD is a perfect complement to driving. After all, CBD products are claimed to improve concentration, provide a sense of calm, relieve stress and anxiety, and much more - all valuable tools for road traffic.

But is there actually anything to worry about when it comes to CBD and driving? Is it even legal to have CBD products in the car? You can find answers to these questions and more information in this blog article.

Driving after CBD consumption - Is it possible?

Basically, this question can be answered with yes. Since CBD - unlike THC - is not psychoactive, the consumption of CBD should neither impair your driving ability nor cause problems in a drug test. However, there are a few things to consider.

  • The legal situation in Germany regarding CBD flowers is quite complicated, as the cannabis plant as a whole is illegal. The sale and possession of CBD flowers is controversial because they can be considered "cannabis flowers" and may have a higher THC content than the legally permitted 0.2%. The legal situation in this case is not clear and can be interpreted differently depending on the federal state. It is therefore advisable not to have CBD flowers in the car.

  • CBD in processed form: CBD products such as oils, creams, capsules, etc., which are made from industrial hemp and have a THC content of less than 0.2%, are generally considered legal. Such products can be legally acquired and used and thus also easily carried in the car.

  • Even if the consumption of CBD products with a THC content of less than 0.2% THC should not cause problems in a drug test, very sensitive people and people who are consuming CBD for the first time should take it slowly to better assess the effect of CBD on their own body and thus their driving ability.

Is my driver's license at risk if I am subjected to a drug test?

Most standard drug tests aim to detect psychoactive THC, not CBD. Therefore, taking CBD products should generally not lead to a positive drug test. However, you need to be careful with the following things:

  • Unfortunately, there are some disreputable CBD providers where the THC content of CBD products could be higher than the legally permitted 0.2%. It is therefore important to obtain CBD products only from reputable providers who have their products laboratory certified, as a drug test for THC could otherwise be positive.

  • Even if you obtain CBD products from a reputable provider who adheres to the legal THC limit of 0.2%, a drug test for THC could be positive if you consume CBD products in extremely high quantities. Here's a calculation example: With a daily intake of 2,000mg CBD oil with 0.2% THC, an accumulation of between 2-5mg THC can occur in the body. This would still have no effect on your driving ability - but a THC drug test could already show a hit here.

  • It is generally advisable to reject quick tests during a police check and instead insist on a blood test, as blood tests are significantly more precise and can prevent false-positive results.

How does CBD affect me?

CBD is one of the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. When ingested, CBD enters the body and works with the natural endocannabinoid system. The influence of CBD on the nervous system affects mood by calming the body and relieving pain and anxiety. Most people's driving ability therefore remains completely unaffected.

However, some people experience side effects such as dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, or gastrointestinal difficulties. If CBD causes such side effects for you, you must decide for yourself whether you can drive safely with CBD or not. Only you know how your body reacts to your normal dose.

If you are consuming CBD for the first time or increasing your dose, it is advisable to try it out at home first before getting behind the wheel. Here you can find out more about the potential side effects of CBD and how you can avoid them.

What else do I need to know about CBD and driving?

It is important to consider potential interactions of CBD with other medications and substances. If you are currently taking medication, you should contact your doctor before taking CBD, let alone getting behind the wheel.

Whether you can drive well with CBD mainly depends on the following factors:

  • Your experience with CBD or your CBD tolerance
  • Your individual body feeling
  • Interactions with other medications and substances

Conclusion: CBD and Driving

While CBD is not psychoactive like its THC counterpart, it still has some effects on our bodies. Even if these generally should not impair our driving ability, this is one of those scenarios where it is probably best not to risk any complications.

Of course, you can easily get behind the wheel if you know your limits and are careful with the dosage. But if you are taking CBD for the first time, you should first find out how it affects you before using it in traffic.

While CBD is completely legal in most cases, this is not true for THC in Germany. So you should be particularly careful that your CBD product does not exceed the limit of 0.2% THC. Otherwise, a positive drug test could well be triggered during a traffic stop.

With our CBD oil, you can be sure that the THC content does not exceed the legal limit. Most of our oils are even significantly below that. You can find the details on the individual product pages.
