Hemp Seed Oil - a local superfood: What science says about its nutrients and potential health benefits


Hemp seed oil has seen growing interest in recent years – not least due to its unique fatty acid profile. Unlike CBD oil, it contains no significant amounts of cannabinoids like CBD or THC. Instead, as a cooking oil, it is primarily the focus of nutritional research due to its content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols, and phytosterols.



But what statements can actually be supported by scientific studies? And where is the data still unclear?


What is hemp seed oil?


Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of Cannabis sativa L. through cold pressing or other gentle methods. The seeds naturally contain almost no cannabinoids. Therefore, it fundamentally differs from CBD oil, which is extracted from flowers and leaves.



From a nutritional perspective, hemp seed oil is one of the vegetable oils with a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids.


The nutritional profile of hemp seed oil

Most of the oil consists of fatty acids. Typically, it contains:



  • Linoleic acid (Omega-6): approximately 50–60%
  • Alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3): approximately 15–25%
  • Oleic acid (Omega-9): approximately 10–15%

Among other things, they serve as building blocks of cell membranes and are precursors of various signaling substances involved in numerous physiological processes.

This fundamental relationship applies regardless of the food source of the fatty acids.

Several human studies investigated whether regular consumption of hemp seed oil can influence the fatty acid composition in the blood.

In addition, scientists are investigating possible connections between hemp seed oil and:

For these areas, mostly preclinical studies or small human studies exist so far.

There is currently no sufficient evidence from human studies for this.

Safety and storage

Hemp seed oil is generally considered well-tolerated as a cooking oil.

Because it is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, it is sensitive to oxygen, light, and heat. Therefore, high-quality hemp seed oil should be stored as cool and dark as possible and consumed within a few weeks after opening.

Due to its composition, cold-pressed hemp seed oil is only conditionally suitable for strong heating.
