CBD flowers are enjoying increasing popularity. They are considered a particularly natural alternative to cannabis, which is now mostly highly potent with a lot of THC.
The problem: CBD flowers look deceptively similar to classic cannabis flowers with a higher THC content. This can lead to difficulties because even after the decriminalization of cannabis, only a certain amount of "weed" is actually allowed.
In the following article, we explain exactly what CBD flowers are, why they are so popular, and how best to consume them. We also give tips on how to benefit from the positive effects without getting into trouble.
Table of Contents
CBD flowers come from the hemp plant and contain high amounts of CBD (cannabidiol) , but only very small amounts of psychoactive THC. They are considered a particularly natural way to benefit from the positive effects of CBD.
If the THC content remains below 0.3% , CBD flowers are unlimitedly legal in Germany . It is important to pay attention to premium quality here - also to avoid unwanted side effects.
Unfortunately, there are also many black sheep on the market where the price-performance ratio simply isn't right. Especially for beginners, it is not always easy to distinguish high-quality CBD flowers from inferior quality.
Alternative to CBD Flowers: CBD Oils from Hanfgeflüster
CBD flowers come from the hemp plant and contain high amounts of cannabidiol (CBD), but only very small amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). As a result, they have no intoxicating effect, but are still rich in valuable cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. They look like classic cannabis flowers and also smell similar, but in Germany they contain less than 0.3% THC.
CBD flowers are offered in various strains that differ in taste, aroma, and cannabinoid profile. There are different cultivation methods, which are distinguished between indoor flowers, greenhouse flowers, and outdoor-grown flowers. The different strains vary considerably in quality, price, and effect.
Indoor flowers grow under controlled conditions and often have a higher CBD content, a more intense aroma, and a finer appearance. Outdoor flowers, on the other hand, are grown under natural sunlight and are often cheaper, but also less intense in taste and appearance. Which variant is better depends on individual preferences: those who value the highest quality usually opt for indoor flowers, while outdoor flowers often represent the more affordable alternative and are preferred for their greater naturalness.
Unfortunately, for beginners, the quality of the flowers offered is difficult to determine - especially when ordering through online shops. We recommend initially testing a smaller amount and carefully observing whether the effect matches what you desire. Also remain vigilant over time: as CBD flowers are a pure natural product, the quality can fluctuate over time.
The effect of CBD flowers is based on the interaction of CBD with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD primarily interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which can produce various positive effects.
It helps to reduce stress and anxiety because it has a calming and relaxing effect. In addition, CBD is often used to relieve pain and inflammation ¹, as it acts on the nervous system and the immune system. Some studies suggest that CBD can help with sleep problems, as it improves sleep quality and makes it easier to fall asleep. Users also report positive effects on muscle tension and cramps.
In our article on the effects of CBD, you'll get a good overview.
Important: CBD flowers can have different effects on individuals. While some people immediately feel a calming effect, for others it takes longer for effects to appear. Generally, however, CBD flowers have no psychoactive effect. This means they can be used without problems in everyday life. If you notice unwanted consciousness-altering effects, discontinue use and consider changing your provider.
Some people choose to smoke CBD flowers because the effects kick in particularly quickly due to rapid absorption into the bloodstream. When smoked, cannabinoids are absorbed through the lungs, leading to a noticeable effect within just a few minutes.
However, smoking is not the healthiest form of consumption, as it can produce harmful combustion products. An alternative is vaporizing (vaping), where the flowers are heated to a temperature of about 160 to 220 degrees Celsius, so that the valuable ingredients are released without harmful combustion occurring.
In addition to inhalation, there are other ways to consume CBD flowers:
Brewing as tea: The flowers should be combined with a fatty carrier (e.g., milk or coconut oil) to make the cannabinoids soluble.
Cooking and baking: Through decarboxylation (heating), the active ingredients are activated and cooked or baked into food.
The duration of CBD flower effects primarily depends on the form of consumption:
Form of Consumption |
Onset of Effect |
Duration of Effect |
|---|---|---|
Smoking/Vaping |
1-5 minutes |
1-3 hours |
Tea/Oral ingestion |
30-90 minutes |
4-8 hours |
Eating (baked goods, etc.) |
45-120 minutes |
6-10 hours |
Inhaled CBD vapor acts the fastest but also for the shortest duration. When taken orally, it takes longer for an effect to occur, as the CBD must first be processed through digestion. However, the effect lasts longer.
A major disadvantage of consuming CBD flowers: The effect is often not precisely controllable, as it is a pure natural product and the effect can vary depending on the plant, cultivation method, and form of consumption. To better assess the effect, some users therefore turn to ready-extracted CBD oil.
Full-spectrum CBD oils, in particular, are as natural as CBD flowers, as they also contain various cannabinoids. They are easier to dose and more discreet to take than CBD flowers. While the latter are often inhaled or processed into food, CBD oil is directly dropped under the tongue or mixed into drinks.
Advantages of CBD oil:
Easy dosing: Precise CBD amounts can be easily determined.
Discreet consumption: No odor or smoke development.
Longer duration of effect: Since the oil is absorbed through the mucous membranes, the effect lasts longer.
In Germany, CBD flowers are in a somewhat legally unclear situation. They can be sold without problems as long as the THC content is below 0.3%. Nevertheless, some authorities view CBD flowers critically, as they are visually indistinguishable from cannabis – which, in turn, is only legal in limited quantities. Users therefore regularly report difficulties when carrying CBD flowers.
Also important: Make sure to buy high-quality CBD flowers with controlled quality. Unfortunately, there are many black sheep on the market who cannot guarantee the quality of their products. It can happen that CBD flowers contain larger amounts of THC and trigger effects you don't want (e.g., intoxicating states).
It's also ideal to consume only organic quality products. This ensures that as few undesirable substances as possible, such as heavy metals, pesticides, or similar, are present.
CBD flowers certainly offer a natural way to experience the positive effects of cannabidiol without psychoactive or intoxicating effects. They can be consumed in various ways, with vaping being the most effective and healthiest method. Always pay attention to the quality and origin of the flowers to benefit from the positive effects without having to fear negative consequences.
Even though CBD flowers with a THC content below 0.3% are fully legal: We recommend consuming CBD flowers ideally at home to avoid conflicts and discussions. For travel and everyday use, it's advisable to use ready-extracted CBD products such as oils or sprays. These can be used particularly discreetly, do not smell, and have a very targeted and long-lasting effect.
