Every person is individual in terms of body chemistry and perception. Thus, the CBD effect also differs for everyone. It therefore makes sense to explore various CBD products and their mode of action and to try out different CBD products.

There are various methods for extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and then further processing it. The combination of extraction method and subsequent processing ultimately determines the spectrum of the CBD product. The following CBD spectra exist:¹

  • Monospectrum CBD / CBD Isolate
  • Broad-spectrum CBD
  • Full-spectrum CBD

What is the Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect describes the synergistic collaboration of the various compounds in cannabis, including cannabinoids (such as CBD and THC) and terpenes. Simply put: The plant as a whole achieves a better effect than the isolated components alone.

The entourage effect allows the ingredients to reinforce each other and modulate their effects. For example, CBD can mitigate the psychoactive effects of THC while simultaneously producing synergistic therapeutic effects. The various cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds work together to create a complex and diverse interaction that enables a wider range of effects.²

What are the extraction methods?

The three CBD spectra can be extracted from the cannabis plant using various methods. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are some common extraction methods:

  1. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Extraction:

    • Use: This method is frequently used for producing all three spectra.
    • Process: CO2 is used under high pressure and low temperatures to extract the desired cannabinoids and terpenes.
    • Advantages: CO2 extraction is very efficient and can be used to produce various types of extracts. It leaves no harmful residues and is environmentally friendly.
    • Disadvantages: The equipment for CO2 extraction is expensive, and the process requires specialized knowledge.

  2. Ethanol Extraction:

    • Use: Suitable for all three spectra, but particularly common for full- and broad-spectrum CBD.
    • Process: Ethanol is used as a solvent to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant.
    • Advantages: Ethanol extraction is less expensive than CO2 extraction and can be carried out in larger quantities.
    • Disadvantages: There is a risk that chlorophyll and other undesirable substances may be co-extracted, which can impair the quality of the end product. Furthermore, the ethanol must be completely removed.

  3. Hydrocarbon Extraction:

    • Use: Often used for full- and broad-spectrum extracts.
    • Process: Use of hydrocarbon solvents like butane or propane to extract cannabinoids and terpenes.
    • Advantages: Very efficient in extracting specific cannabinoids and terpenes.
    • Disadvantages: Risk of solvent residues in the final product and potential explosion hazard when handling the solvents.

  4. Lipid Extraction:

    • Use: Can be used for all three spectra, but is less common.
    • Process: The use of fats (like coconut oil) to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant.
    • Advantages: Natural and safer process without the use of harsh solvents.
    • Disadvantages: Less efficient than other methods and can lead to products with lower concentrations.

The extraction method influences the quality of the CBD extract. The subsequent processing ultimately determines whether the end product is a monospectrum, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum product:

  • Monospectrum CBD Oil: Is produced by further processing and refining the extract to isolate almost pure CBD.

  • Broad-spectrum CBD Oil: Is produced by removing certain compounds (such as THC) from the full-spectrum extract.

  • Full-spectrum CBD Oil: Contains all cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds found in the plant and requires less processing after extraction.

How do I choose the right CBD spectrum for me?

Choosing the right CBD spectrum depends on several factors. Here are some important aspects you should consider:

  • Purpose of use:
Consider what you want to use CBD for. Different CBD spectra may be suitable for different applications. At Hanfgeflüster, we generally believe in the effect of the entourage effect and therefore mainly rely on full-spectrum CBD oils. For extreme athletes, however, a broad-spectrum or monospectrum CBD oil may be more suitable. Animals, especially cats, do not tolerate THC and terpenes as well. You should therefore only administer monospectrum CBD oils to your pet to avoid unnecessary risks. If you are unsure which CBD spectrum suits your needs, please contact us for a personal consultation.

  • Sensitivity to THC:
Some people are extremely sensitive to THC. In these cases, a broad-spectrum or monospectrum CBD oil should be used.

  • Legal and professional considerations:
In Germany and many other countries, small amounts of THC are not a problem. However, it may be that THC is completely illegal in some countries or not allowed professionally for various reasons. In these cases, too, a broad-spectrum or monospectrum CBD oil should be used to avoid legal or professional problems.

  • Medical considerations:
If you have health problems or are taking other medications, it may be advisable to involve a doctor in your decision. He or she will be able to help you consider your health situation when making your decision.

CBD Spectrum - Conclusion

Every person is unique, and accordingly, the effect of different CBD spectra varies from person to person. It therefore makes sense to explore the different CBD spectra and find the right CBD product for yourself.

At Hanfgeflüster, we primarily focus on full-spectrum CBD oils, where the entourage effect can fully unfold its potential. For this, we use the CO2 extraction method to produce a high-quality product while also being environmentally friendly. For people who do not want or cannot consume THC, we have also developed a monospectrum CBD oil. We have also thought of your pet and developed a CBD oil specifically for animals.

If you are unsure which CBD oil suits your needs, do not hesitate to contact us personally – we will be happy to advise you!
