Every year, over 10 million hectares of tropical rainforests are cleared, progressively destroying the most biodiverse ecosystem on our planet. This destruction causes many different problems for both humans and animals.
For example, trees provide a habitat for thousands of animal species, which is taken away from them by massive deforestation. In addition, trees prevent floods and soil erosion and help to provide the soil with important nutrients needed for agriculture. If farmers cannot grow anything there, their farms close down and they have no choice but to move to overcrowded cities to look for work. Often, they have to sell themselves or their families into slavery to survive.
Some figures illustrate how dire the situation of many people really is due to deforestation:
Therefore, we are very pleased to announce that, together with our partner Eden Reforestation Projects, we will plant one tree for every CBD oil sold, in order to contribute a small part to counteracting this devastating development.
Eden Reforestation Projects (Eden Projects) is a non-profit organization that restores natural landscapes destroyed by deforestation, primarily in developing countries. Eden works with resident communities and villages, employing thousands of local villagers. They receive the necessary training and tools required to plant millions of trees each year and protect them as they grow. Currently, approximately 15 million trees can be planted per month.
Eden Reforestation Projects was founded in 2004 by Dr. Stephen Fitch. He grew up in the Philippines as the child of aid workers and thus experienced firsthand the consequences of radical deforestation for the poor population there. During a stay in Ethiopia, he was invited by the then Prime Minister to take over an abandoned forest restoration project. Thereupon, within a few months, he developed and implemented the unique "Employ-to-Plant" method.
To this day, Eden Projects successfully addresses the connection between deforestation and extreme poverty and continues to develop its highly effective model of reforestation and job creation.
Since its launch in Ethiopia, Eden has expanded to Madagascar in 2007, Haiti in 2010, Nepal in 2015, Indonesia in 2017, and Mozambique in 2018. By 2018, they had jointly planted over 200 million trees and aim to plant at least 500 million trees each year by 2025, while continuing to provide life-changing wages to tens of thousands of villagers in these countries.
The residents of these villages manage the tree nurseries and planting sites and plant native tree species there. The survival rate of the seedlings is over 80%. People receive a stable income to support their families, and the reforestation creates new healthy forests, causing the negative effects of deforestation to begin to disappear.
In addition to our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, we strive to offer the most sustainable product possible to the earth and its inhabitants. Our vision is to reduce our ecological footprint and actively commit ourselves to the environment and future generations.
We are committed to ensuring that the resources given to us are only used to the extent that they can naturally regenerate. For example, our secondary packaging consists of 90% recycled material and is printed with water-based ink to reduce pollutant emissions. We use hemp wool as filling material. Furthermore, the greenhouse gases generated by transportation are offset by shipping with DHL GoGreen.
It is important to us to be able to trace where our hemp comes from all the way back to the fields. We grow it in Europe, predominantly in Germany, Lithuania, and Poland, to keep our supply chains as short as possible. Our farmers use only varieties grown to the highest standards. The quality of hemp always depends on various factors such as weather, soil, sowing time, and sun. Therefore, we have a network of many experienced farmers with hemp fields across Europe who can handle any eventuality.
Our extraction method is also sustainable, as the process conditions are lower than many other methods, taking place at lower temperature and pressure. The solvent added to the biomass can also be reused repeatedly.
