What is CBD - and how does it work in dogs?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, a natural active ingredient from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Unlike the better-known THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is not psychoactive. So it doesn't make people or animals like dogs or cats high or addicted.
Your dog (just like you, by the way) has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) in its body - a kind of control center that plays a role in many processes:

What's in CBD oil for dogs?
Most CBD oils are extracted from industrial hemp - which is hemp that naturally contains very little THC. The extract is then mixed with a carrier oil, often hemp oil or MCT oil.
Under no circumstances should you just use your own CBD oil for your dog! Some additives (e.g. essential oils, xylitol) in human products can be really dangerous for dogs.

Can CBD harm my dog? Risks at a glance
First the good news: CBD is considered quite well tolerated. Side effects are very few (similar to pain) and usually only mild. Nevertheless, as with almost any active ingredient, side effects can occur - especially if the dose is too high or the product is not good.
Possible side effects are:
Your dog suddenly drinks more
They seem a bit tired or slightly groggy
Gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea
Temporary drop in blood pressure
Reduced activity in sensitive dogs
These symptoms usually disappear quickly if you adjust the dose or stop CBD entirely. However, if your dog reacts very strongly, please consult a vet!
And: Always observe your pet carefully. If it shows any of the mentioned side effects, behaves differently than usual, or seems unwell, stop the product and talk to your vet.

Finding the right dose – here's how!
The perfect CBD amount for your dog depends on various factors. These include the animal's weight, the severity of the symptoms, and your dog's general health. Of course, the concentration of the chosen product also plays a major role.
As a general rule: Start with a low dose (about 0.1-0.2 mg CBD per kg body weight) and slowly increase until your dog noticeably improves.
