Whether for arthritis, anxiety or epilepsy - CBD oil is now considered a true all-rounder for many human ailments. But CBD is also said to work wonders for pets.

Many dog owners are fully embracing the trend and regularly providing their furry friends with the alleged miracle cure, while others are more cautious. Between anecdotal reports, skeptical voices, and a still unclear study situation, a crucial question remains unanswered: Is CBD oil really safe for dogs?

In this article, you'll learn what CBD is, how it works in dogs, what you should pay attention to when using it - and when caution is advised.

The most important things at a glance

CBD oil is very well tolerated by dogs and has only a few, usually mild side effects. In contrast, there are a variety of positive experiences and even initial studies on the topic of CBD oil for dogs.

It is important to use only special CBD products for dogs and to ensure that no harmful ingredients and 0% THC are included. Because: Dogs are particularly sensitive to THC !

The tolerability of CBD also depends on the correct dosage. Depending on the size and constitution of the animal, different amounts are appropriate. Also: Beware of possible interactions with medications !

What is CBD - and how does it work in dogs?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a natural active ingredient from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Unlike the better-known THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is not psychoactive. So it doesn't make people or animals like dogs or cats high or addicted.

Your dog (just like you, by the way) has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) in its body - a kind of control center that plays a role in many processes:

  • How strongly pain is perceived

  • How well your dog sleeps

  • Whether he is hungry or not

  • How his immune system works

  • His mood

  • Inflammation in the body

CBD docks to specific receptors in the body and can thus influence physical and emotional balance. In dogs, the ECS works similarly to humans, which is why CBD oil can generally also work in four-legged friends.

What's in CBD oil for dogs?

Most CBD oils are extracted from industrial hemp - which is hemp that naturally contains very little THC. The extract is then mixed with a carrier oil, often hemp oil or MCT oil.

Under no circumstances should you just use your own CBD oil for your dog! Some additives (e.g. essential oils, xylitol) in human products can be really dangerous for dogs.

Particularly important: Dogs are very sensitive to THC, the psychoactive substance in cannabis. CBD products for dogs must therefore contain as little THC as possible!

Why so many dog lovers swear by CBD

CBD has long been successfully used in dogs for all kinds of problems. Our users are enthusiastic and report, among other things, on:

1. Less pain from chronic ailments

Older dogs with arthritis or damaged joints particularly benefit from CBD. The active ingredient can reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and possibly even slow the progression of the disease.

2. More relaxed with anxiety and stress

Do you know that feeling? Your dog trembles like a leaf in a thunderstorm or goes completely crazy when he has to travel by car or train? CBD can have a calming effect without making your four-legged friend tired or drowsy. This can also be very helpful in exceptional situations that sometimes cannot be avoided (e.g. flights).

3. Support for cancer

Some dog owners use CBD as a supportive treatment for cancer. It can stimulate appetite, relieve pain, or alleviate the nasty side effects of chemotherapy.

4. Help with skin problems

Allergies, itching, sore spots? The anti-inflammatory effect of CBD can also help here. However, not every dog responds equally well to it.

What does science say? Initial studies and findings

First things first: There are very few studies on the use of CBD in dogs; the focus is primarily on research for humans. Nevertheless, some scientific works are already making people sit up and take notice:

In 2020, for example, it was shown that dogs with osteoarthritis were able to walk significantly better after CBD administration and were generally more agile. (1) A meta-study from 2023 also confirmed these results. (2) Nevertheless, researchers agree: To develop safe, standardized therapies, significantly more large-scale studies under controlled conditions are needed.

Can CBD harm my dog? Risks at a glance

First the good news: CBD is considered quite well tolerated. Side effects are very few (similar to pain) and usually only mild. Nevertheless, as with almost any active ingredient, side effects can occur - especially if the dose is too high or the product is not good.

Possible side effects are:

  • Your dog suddenly drinks more

  • They seem a bit tired or slightly groggy

  • Gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea

  • Temporary drop in blood pressure

  • Reduced activity in sensitive dogs

These symptoms usually disappear quickly if you adjust the dose or stop CBD entirely. However, if your dog reacts very strongly, please consult a vet!

And: Always observe your pet carefully. If it shows any of the mentioned side effects, behaves differently than usual, or seems unwell, stop the product and talk to your vet.

Caution with medication!

This is important: CBD can influence the effect of other medications because it is metabolized in the liver by the same enzyme system as many drugs. You need to be particularly careful with:

  • Blood thinners

  • Heart medications

  • Epilepsy medications

  • Immunosuppressants

  • Certain antibiotics

If your dog is on regular medication, be sure to talk to your vet before starting CBD!

Before use: Check quality!

Unfortunately, there is now a real jungle of CBD products for dogs, and not all of them live up to their promises. Many manufacturers make false statements about the purity of the product (keyword THC content) or even conceal harmful substances.

When buying, pay attention to:

  • Guaranteed 0% THC content

  • Organic quality where possible

  • Gentle manufacturing

  • No additives that are not suitable for dogs (e.g., essential oils)

Flavors specifically tailored for dogs (e.g., beef flavor) help to make the oil particularly palatable for your furry friend.

And please: Stay away from cheap products without clear manufacturer information. Your dog cannot choose the product - the responsibility lies entirely with you!

Finding the right dose – here's how!

The perfect CBD amount for your dog depends on various factors. These include the animal's weight, the severity of the symptoms, and your dog's general health. Of course, the concentration of the chosen product also plays a major role.

As a general rule: Start with a low dose (about 0.1-0.2 mg CBD per kg body weight) and slowly increase until your dog noticeably improves.

Important note:
Individual reactions can vary, as every furry friend is different. Observe your dog closely and adjust the dose as needed.

Hands off in these cases!

In some cases, we strongly advise against giving CBD:

  1. For pregnant or lactating female dogs

  2. For very young puppies (under 6 months)

  3. For dogs with severe liver problems

  4. If your dog is taking medication that burdens the liver

  5. In case of known allergies to hemp

When in doubt, always consult your vet first!

Administration: What's the best way to give my dog CBD?

Most people administer the oil directly into the mouth or mix it with food. Some dogs like the taste, others turn up their noses – in which case, CBD oils with dog-friendly flavors (e.g., beef) or good old liver sausage can help.

Not a miracle cure, but...

Despite all the enthusiasm, CBD is not a panacea. It can naturally help in certain situations and with many symptoms – without severe risks or side effects. Nevertheless, it never replaces a visit to the vet or necessary therapy!

If you want to try CBD for your dog, inform yourself well beforehand, only use high-quality products, and observe exactly how your dog behaves after administration. And: don't hesitate to involve your vet.

Our conclusion: Minimize risks through smart application

CBD has many benefits and alleviates problems - from joint pain to stress. And it does so with very few risks and more naturally than other medications. But: You bear the responsibility to pay close attention to your pet, to dose and apply the products correctly, and to choose only the highest quality for your furry friend.

Our customers' opinions:

"I take Hanfgeflüster oil myself and have been looking for a calming solution for our dog during travel for a long time. After super support from customer service, I found the right dose for our little rocket. Filu weighs 12 kg and I gave him 3 drops once. He was able to lick the drops well off my palm. It took about 1 hour for him to calm down. So give it in good time before starting the journey. Then everything was fine in the car. He slept, was relaxed. No restlessness, no whining or whimpering. For a 6-hour trip, a real relief for everyone. We took breaks and could also go for a short walk. All great. Thank you very much. This will be a good companion for us."
