A diagnosis of dementia is often an enormous emotional burden for both those affected and their relatives. Despite intensive scientific research, dementia remains incurable to this day. It is all the more important to improve the quality of life of those affected and possibly even slow down the disease.
This is where CBD (cannabidiol), a non-psychoactive substance from the cannabis plant, is increasingly becoming the focus of research: studies and experience reports from recent years show that CBD can have a supportive effect on various dementia symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disorders and memory problems.
We will look at how CBD can be used for dementia, what experiences users have had, and highlight side effects, as well as possible fears and prejudices.
Table of Contents
Dementia, a collection of very different symptoms, is currently not curable. However, CBD could help to slow down its progression and improve the overall quality of life of those affected.
Many patients and relatives have concerns and prejudices about the use of CBD, but these are unfounded.
If CBD is taken with other medications for Alzheimer's/dementia, this must definitely be discussed with the treating physician.
"Dementia" refers to various symptoms such as memory loss, cognitive impairments, and personality changes. The most well-known and common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. This involves a progressive destruction of nerve cells in the brain, which in turn leads to a deterioration of memory and cognitive function, as well as the loss of everyday abilities.
The causes of the various dementia symptoms range from neuronal inflammation to oxidative stress and the accumulation of so-called beta-amyloid plaques in the brain.
CBD could help with dementia in two different ways:

Several studies suggest that CBD can influence plaque formation by reducing the formation and effect of beta-amyloid peptides through various mechanisms. (Overview of various studies in ³)
Anxiety and sleep disorders are common accompanying symptoms in Alzheimer's and dementia patients, which significantly reduce their quality of life. Here, too, CBD with its influence on the body's own endocannabinoid system could be helpful, although research results are not yet conclusive. However, users are already reporting the calming effect of CBD, which could also be very helpful in dementia.
Even if scientific studies currently do not provide clear results on the effect of CBD on dementia - users are already reporting the positive effects of taking CBD products for dementia:
Relatives report that restlessness and aggression in Alzheimer's patients decrease. Depression, which often accompanies the disease, also decreases.
CBD helps many dementia patients alleviate the sleep disorders associated with the disease. The quality of life of those affected increases significantly, as does that of their caregivers.
Anxiety, which often accompanies dementia, appears to be reduced by CBD.
However, the effects are not equally pronounced in all patients, which is also related to the highly individual course of the disease.
CBD is generally considered well-tolerated, but like any active ingredient, side effects can occur. These include:
Fatigue
Dry mouth
Changes in appetite and digestion
Interactions with medications: CBD can affect the action of medications, especially those metabolized by the CYP450 enzyme in the liver, such as blood thinners or antidepressants.
In general, side effects are very mild. Nevertheless, the dosage should be reduced if necessary until the symptoms subside.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid CBD.
Patients with severe liver disease should only take CBD under medical supervision.
Relatives of dementia patients, in particular, often worry that giving CBD to their loved ones might not be beneficial.
Many potential users are concerned that CBD could be:
Psychoactive: Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD has no psychoactive effects. It does not make you "high" or impair perception.
Addictive: The World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that CBD is not addictive.
Illegal: High-quality CBD products with a THC content of less than 0.2% are legal in Germany and freely available outside pharmacies.
Unlike CBD oil and other CBD products, medical cannabis contains both THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC has psychoactive properties, which can have both benefits and side effects in dementia patients, such as euphoria or cognitive impairment.
CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive and primarily works through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. Studies show that while medical cannabis can have more comprehensive effects than pure CBD, it is associated with significantly higher side effects that can be dramatic for dementia patients (e.g., psychosis, addiction). Even though CBD offers many benefits for dementia patients, taking it can sometimes be challenging for those affected and their relatives. Choosing a suitable form of CBD is therefore particularly important to make administration as simple and pleasant as possible. Taste, ease of use, and the ability to take it playfully or creatively play a decisive role, especially for people with cognitive impairments.
CBD Oils and Drops
CBD oils are usually dropped under the tongue for quick effect. However, they can also be conveniently mixed into food or drinks to facilitate intake. Since the typical hemp taste is not appealing to everyone, oils with additional flavors are available, e.g., our golden CBD oil with turmeric and lemon.
CBD Capsules or Tablets
This form of administration is tasteless and can be easily adapted for older people or those with dementia due to its simple intake with water. The dosage is also clear and easy to manage.
CBD Sprays
A CBD spray is particularly practical as it is sprayed directly under the tongue and offers a quick effect. Administration is uncomplicated, and there is no need to chew or swallow medication.
CBD in Food and Drinks
An appealing option is the possibility of mixing CBD oil into food or drinks such as smoothies, tea, or sweets. This form is particularly suitable for dementia patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or have a sensitive mouthfeel.
CBD Topicals (Applied to the Skin)
For dementia patients who, for example, have pain or skin problems, CBD ointments and creams are suitable. They are applied directly to affected areas of the body and do not need to be swallowed.
It is generally important to make administration as easy as possible for the affected individuals while ensuring that the CBD works as desired. Each form of administration should therefore be individually adapted to the condition and needs of the affected person and changed during the course of treatment if necessary.

CBD can be a useful addition but should be integrated into a comprehensive treatment concept. This includes:
Healthy diet: A Mediterranean diet, rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, can support brain health.
Regular exercise: Physical activity improves blood circulation to the brain and can slow the progression of dementia.
Brain training: Puzzles, memory exercises, or social activities can strengthen cognitive reserve.
Pharmacological therapy: Medically prescribed medications should not be neglected alongside CBD. Important: Always consult the treating physician when taking CBD and medications!
CBD oil offers great potential to improve the lives of people with dementia and possibly even slow the progression of the disease – especially through its anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anxiolytic properties. However, further research is needed until all mechanisms of action are understood.
Nevertheless, CBD can already make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life for people with dementia/Alzheimer's and also give relatives the good feeling of supporting their loved ones in the best possible way. It is important that the use of CBD products is always discussed with the treating physician to optimally coordinate them with other treatments.
