CBD Oil: Taste as a Mark of Quality

Anyone who spends a bit more time with CBD oil quickly realizes: Not all CBD oils are the same. However, the conversation often revolves around full-spectrum oils – and these are quite divisive, at least in terms of taste. While some find the taste wonderful and rave about freshly cut grass, others just grimace in disgust. "And I'm supposed to keep this in my mouth for a while?!"

This article explains what the different CBD oils actually taste like and what alternatives you have if the taste of full-spectrum oils isn't to your liking. (Spoiler: A lot!)

The Most Important Things at a Glance

The taste of CBD oil is not due to CBD itself, but to terpenes and the carrier oil used. High-quality full-spectrum oils, in particular, therefore have a rather intense taste.

We still recommend sublingual absorption (under the tongue) to optimally absorb all active ingredients and to let the characteristic hemp taste become part of your wellness ritual.

For beginners, naturally flavored oils or taste-neutral isolates help to gradually get used to the taste. You should rather avoid artificial flavors - also because they can mask quality defects.

If you don't like CBD at first...
Give yourself 3-5 days – many people get used to the natural bitter substances surprisingly quickly. Be sure to keep the drops under your tongue, as this allows you to absorb more active ingredients and the taste remains a little milder.

CBD Taste - Terpenes and Carrier Oil

CBD oil is a bit sneaky: at first glance, it looks quite neutral - just like oil. Many therefore expect it to taste like almost nothing. But: Anyone who puts CBD under their tongue for the first time and leaves it there for a few minutes quickly realizes: This tastes like something!

However, this is not due to CBD (cannabidiol) itself - which actually tastes like nothing. What brings a whole bouquet of aromas, on the other hand, are the secondary plant compounds that are also contained in full-spectrum oils, especially the so-called terpenes, which are responsible for the characteristic scent and taste of many plants. The carrier oil, with which the extracted CBD oil is mixed to facilitate dosing, also has its own distinct taste. This carrier oil is often also obtained from the hemp plant (hemp seed oil), but coconut oil (MCT oil) can also be used as a carrier oil.

And it is precisely this oil from hemp seeds that brings a taste that some describe as "nutty" or "earthy" - and which others find primarily unpleasantly bitter.

Sublingual Intake - Is It Necessary?

Let's be honest: Not everyone likes the taste of CBD. This makes it seem even harder to keep the drops under the tongue for a few seconds, as recommended, before swallowing the CBD oil. But: The so-called "sublingual intake" of full-spectrum oil ensures that you absorb many of the cannabinoids it contains, including CBD, CBG, and CBN, directly through your oral mucous membranes. Since not all cannabinoids survive the journey through your digestive tract unscathed, this method ensures you get the maximum effect from your CBD oil.

This is also a major disadvantage of capsules or food products with added CBD. On the one hand, some of the additives in them are quite questionable, and CBD full-spectrum oil is still the most natural choice. At the same time, valuable active ingredients can also be destroyed by stomach acid and the like, which you actually want to absorb. Furthermore, absorption through the gastrointestinal tract can significantly delay the effects.

We therefore generally recommend sublingual intake of a full-spectrum oil. The characteristic taste is then also an indication of gentle and minimal processing of the product - and consequently a lot of positive effects. And: In fact, one gets used to the taste of CBD oil well through sublingual intake. Once it has become part of your daily routine, you quickly associate it with self-care and well-being and won't want to miss it anymore.

Aroma Oils for Beginners

Of course, whether one likes the taste of CBD or not is ultimately a matter of personal preference. To make CBD a seamless part of your everyday life, you can use a few tips and tricks if you don't like the taste at first.

Tip 1: Aroma oils! This form of CBD oil is becoming increasingly popular. There are many different flavors. However, we recommend choosing only oils that have been flavored with natural substances, such as our Golden CBD Oil with the natural taste of turmeric and citrus fruits.

Oils with overly strong flavors (e.g., strawberry or vanilla) are usually less natural, and it is not yet entirely clear what effect these substances have on the efficacy of CBD. Some providers also use strong flavors to mask the rather low quality of their CBD products.

Another Alternative: CBD Isolate

Trick number 2: If you really can't get used to the taste of CBD at all, isolates might be a good option for you. These are pure CBD products, using MCT oil as a carrier oil, which is completely odorless and tasteless.

However, with isolates, you forgo the full spectrum of active ingredients found in full-spectrum oils, such as other cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant compounds. These substances can have their own positive effects (e.g., the entourage effect), which you miss out on when taking CBD isolate.

CBD Taste as a Ritual for You

Interestingly, some of our customers report that they no longer want to do without the very special CBD taste and completely reject flavored products, for example. For them, the original hemp taste in CBD oil has become part of their very personal well-being ritual, with which they have integrated CBD into their daily lives.

If the typical aroma doesn't appeal to you, try the following, for example, to get a good night's sleep: Make yourself comfortable, a candle, warm socks, and - if you like - an incense stick will ensure you feel really good. Then drip your dose of CBD oil under your tongue and leave it there for a few seconds.

Listen within yourself, even past the initial, possibly unpleasant, impression. What does the taste experience do to you in this situation? What aromas can you perceive? What does the taste remind you of?

Try to regularly take time for this small ritual, even if you might prefer other variants in everyday life. Observe how your perception of the taste changes and what the interplay of a positive environment and mindful observation of the taste might have to do with it.

Quality and Taste

Last but not least, taste is always a matter of quality. High-quality CBD products may have a distinct taste, but they are never truly bad. Those CBD products that taste genuinely unpleasant are usually not of high quality and are certainly not a great pleasure. Inform yourself beforehand about your manufacturer's quality standards and also check out the experiences of other users.

Another big advantage if you get used to the characteristic taste of CBD: You quickly notice if the oil no longer tastes the way it should.

Our Conclusion: Find the Oil That Suits You

CBD oil can be a challenge for your taste buds - but it doesn't have to be. There are many ways to make it easier for you to get started, from naturally flavored oils to tasteless isolates.

In the long run, however, it is worth carefully approaching the original hemp taste and letting it become part of your personal well-being ritual. And: A slight grassy note and a few bitter substances show you that you are dealing with a genuine, high-quality natural product that truly benefits you and your body.
