Back pain is a constant companion in everyday life for many people. Sometimes, attempts are made to ignore the problem for as long as possible. If this is no longer possible due to the intensity of the pain, the natural tendency is to reach for painkillers. However, prolonged use of these can have serious health consequences.
CBD represents a natural alternative to conventional medications. It is an active ingredient from the cannabis plant that can provide relief for numerous physical and psychological problems. In the following article, we want to take a closer look at the potential effects of CBD on back pain.
Back pain is a common condition: According to a publication by the RKI in March 2021, around 61.3% of people in Germany reported having suffered from back pain at least once in the preceding 12 months.¹
The reasons for this widespread ailment are diverse. However, the main causes are considered to be lack of exercise and incorrect posture, which are exacerbated by our modern lifestyle.
Do you work an office job and like to sink onto the couch after work? While the latter may be understandable, you are certainly not doing your back health any favors by being inactive. On the contrary: Too little exercise weakens the back muscles over time, which promotes pain.
As a result of the discomfort, most people tend to rest even more, which further worsens the situation. Simply put, a vicious circle of lack of exercise, pain, and consequently increased reluctance to move is created. Yet, especially in the case of back pain, it would be important to remain physically active.
In addition to lack of exercise, incorrect posture also plays a decisive role in the development of back problems, as already mentioned. Possible incorrect postures in everyday life include, for example, a non-ergonomically designed workplace, sitting for too long, lifting heavy loads from the back, and excessive cell phone use (keyword: "text neck").
The psyche can also be a cause of back problems. If you carry too much emotional burden on your shoulders, this can literally manifest itself in the form of back pain.
Therefore, you should review your daily life before resorting to painkillers: Are you currently under a lot of tension? Are there ways to relieve yourself?
Generally speaking: If you suffer from back pain for a longer period, a visit to the doctor is advisable. They can rule out serious causes such as arthritis or osteoporosis through an examination.
Now you are informed about the various possible causes of back pain. But how can CBD help? The natural hemp extract cannabidiol (CBD for short) has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects, as shown by various studies.² CBD can also be used as a supportive measure for psychological causes, as it has a relaxing effect.
For the treatment of back pain, CBD is primarily used internally in the form of oil, which you drop the desired amount under your tongue with a pipette. However, CBD oil is also suitable for external use. In this case, you dab the oil on the painful body parts.
How the active ingredient unfolds its effect in the body is not yet conclusively scientifically clarified. It is suspected that CBD docks onto the body's own endocannabinoid system (ECS) and can positively influence various receptors there.
For better understanding, let's take a brief detour into medicine: The human endocannabinoid system consists of various enzymes, endocannabinoids, and cannabinoid receptors. This complex regulatory system influences the functions of the central nervous system. The CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are mainly found on immune and nerve cells, play a central role here.
CB1 and CB2 are significantly involved in the development of pain in the body. The former receptor influences pain perception, while the latter is responsible for anti-inflammation. Also important to mention are the vanilloid receptors type 1, which are responsible for transmitting pain to the brain. CBD binds to these receptors, thereby blocking pain transmission and stopping inflammatory processes.
Numerous testimonials, which can regularly be read online as well as in medical journals, confirm that many back pain patients experience a significant reduction in their symptoms through the use of hemp oil. This applies to both pain and inflammatory processes. A current study is investigating whether cannabis can provide pain relief for chronic back pain equivalent to opioids.³
The possible dosage of CBD oil for back pain depends on the severity of the pain. For mild to moderate discomfort, 3 drops of a 10% CBD oil are usually sufficient. If necessary, you can increase the dose until the desired effect occurs.
In the case of severe and chronic complaints, the recommended dosage is 2 x 4 drops of a 15% CBD oil. Here, too, the dose can be increased after a few days if the desired effect is not yet fully noticeable.
