It's no coincidence that CBD oil has become one of the most popular ways to relieve pain naturally and without strong medication. It has very few side effects, is not heavily processed, and yet has a holistic effect on the entire organism – not just on individual symptoms.
In this article, you will learn how CBD works against pain, what the study situation looks like, and what you should consider for optimal CBD pain relief.
CBD has become a popular alternative for natural pain management. Unlike conventional medicines, this treatment has virtually no side effects and is not addictive. This is supported by the World Health Organization and many independent studies.
Important: The right dosage, the appropriate product, and the highest possible product quality.
If you choose the right product for yourself and take some time to find the optimal dosage, CBD offers a highly effective alternative or supplement to conventional painkillers.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the active compounds naturally found in the cannabis plant. Unlike the cannabis component THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is not psychoactive. CBD therefore does not alter consciousness; it does not make you "high".
What it does do: CBD relaxes, improves overall well-being, relieves anxiety and stress, and alleviates pain. This has been supported by many scientific studies on various conditions, as well as everyday and medical experience. The effect, according to current knowledge, is based on CBD's action on the endocannabinoid system ( ECS), a part of our nervous system. The ECS is involved in sleep and well-being, among other things, as well as in the development of pain.
In addition to the endocannabinoid system, CBD also interacts with other pathways in the nervous system. For instance, there is evidence that CBD targets TRPV1 receptors ("capsaicin receptors"), which are involved in pain and temperature sensation, and the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, which is associated with mood, anxiety, and stress processing. A possible modulation of immune cells in the nervous system, known as microglia, is also discussed – they could play a role in how inflammation and pain are influenced long-term.
Studies also suggest that CBD activates the production of the body's own cannabinoids, which could explain its positive effect on our pain sensation. Furthermore, it has been shown that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and can therefore help with painful conditions such as arthritis. Overall, studies show that people with chronic pain experience less pain overall and sleep better thanks to CBD. Their overall quality of life is also improved.
CBD can alleviate inflammation-related pain. This makes it a good candidate for relieving post-operative pain and other types of pain stemming from injuries, as well as reducing the need for conventional painkillers.
CBD can also help with headaches (tension headaches) and migraines. Tension headaches are primarily muscular. Here, CBD can help to relax and reduce stress, which is often the cause of headaches. But even with "real" migraines, there are indications that the interaction of CBD with the 5-HT1A receptor could bring relief.
CBD can also be very helpful for menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). Menstrual pain is usually inflammatory and hormonally induced. CBD can help here through its anti-inflammatory properties, its relaxing effect, and its systemic modulation of pain perception.
Phantom pains are considered particularly difficult to treat as they stem from changes in the brain. Initial preclinical data suggest that CBD, through its anti-inflammatory and neuromodulatory properties, could help alleviate the pain. (3) However, robust human studies are currently lacking.
Especially online, the selection of CBD products has become quite confusing. Many affected individuals therefore either choose products that are too weakly dosed for severe pain, or they overdose for mild discomfort.
The good news: Too much CBD is not dramatic. If you start with too high a dose, your body usually reacts with mild side effects like digestive problems and diarrhea. However, these symptoms disappear as soon as you reduce the dose. According to current knowledge, dosages of up to 1200 mg/day are safe; for that, you would have to take at least 30 times the typical dosage (40 mg/day).
CBD acts on the entire organism via the endocannabinoid system. And because we are all very different, the effect can also vary from person to person. In addition, everyone perceives pain very differently. Finding the right dose for you usually takes some patience – but the effect is gentle and long-lasting.
The motto is "start low, go slow": Start with a low dosage (i.e., a low CBD concentration, e.g., 5% and 1-2 drops) and increase it slowly until the desired effect occurs.
Our CBD dosage calculator can give you an initial estimate for the appropriate dosage.
CBD oil can be used to relieve pain. Various forms of intake are suitable for this:
For mild pain: To relieve mild pain and improve overall well-being, we recommend a full-spectrum CBD oil with 5% CBD. Many users find 4-8 drops twice a day sufficient to alleviate symptoms. But as mentioned, the right dose for you may be lower or higher.
A CBD oil for rubbing can also be a good choice for mild pain. Our Belly Butter, for example, is very helpful for menstrual discomfort or muscle tension. It warms slightly and provides relief in combination with a gentle massage.
For severe pain: For pain therapy in cases of severe and chronic pain, a CBD oil with a content of at least 10% CBD is recommended. Higher concentrations are used for very severe pain and in connection with diseases such as fibromyalgia or MS. CBD is also used for pain therapy in connection with chemotherapy.
In such cases, we recommend consulting your doctor to develop the optimal therapy for you and to check whether your CBD product can be covered by health insurance.

Especially for pain, how you consume CBD can make a big difference.
Smoking or vaping is the particularly fast way. The effect sets in almost immediately. However, many users report that the effect can be too strong and almost overwhelming. While CBD is something like the gentle brother of other cannabinoids (e.g. THC) - when smoked, even CBD can be quite potent. In addition, the effect is shorter than with sublingual intake.
The gentler way to consume CBD: CBD oils. Some users swear by full-spectrum oils, which contain a whole range of other valuable cannabinoids and terpenes in addition to CBD. Others prefer pure CBD in the form of CBD isolates.
In general, CBD oils taken orally act somewhat slower than when inhaled. You can accelerate the effect a little by keeping the oil in your mouth for about half a minute during intake. This way, you already absorb some of the active ingredient through the oral mucosa, and the pain-relieving effect can set in quickly.
The rest is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Although this takes about 1 to 2 hours, it provides gentle, long-lasting pain relief.
After harvesting, CBD extract is obtained primarily from the hemp flowers, but also from the upper leaves of the plants (more precisely: the female hemp plant). At Hanfgeflüster, we use the elaborate CO2 extraction method for this. This method is particularly environmentally friendly and ensures that no chemical residues end up in our oils, as no chemicals are used.
From this extract, we produce various products such as full-spectrum oils, isolates, and creams.
CBD oil: CBD oils are currently the most popular Hanfgeflüster products. Full-spectrum oils, in particular, are enjoying great popularity, but isolates are also gaining more and more fans. Regarding the difference between full-spectrum oils, isolates, and crystals, spray-form oils have also proven to be a practical addition in everyday life. The central substance here is also a full-spectrum CBD oil.
CBD creams: The application of CBD cream or CBD oil for rubbing against pain works particularly well locally for mild pain. Simply rub the oil or cream on the desired area of the skin. The cannabidiol is slowly absorbed by the skin, and massaging enhances the soothing effect. For acute pain, you should repeat the application several times a day.
Additionally, CBD can have an antiseptic, i.e., anti-inflammatory, effect on the skin. Several studies are currently underway on the effectiveness of CBD in patients with inflammatory skin diseases. (1) Thus, CBD could also help relieve pain due to eczema and skin inflammation.
CBD Liquid: Inhaling CBD, for example via vapes, works particularly quickly. However, the use of CBD vapes has some significant disadvantages, which we discuss in detail here.
CBD flowers: CBD flowers are the dried inflorescences of hemp plants with a high CBD content. They can be smoked or used to make DIY CBD oils or tinctures. The problem: CBD flowers look confusingly similar to cannabis flowers with THC content. This can be difficult for you as a user, for example, because you unintentionally consume THC.
The safest, most long-lasting and comfortable way to consume CBD remains CBD oils and CBD creams.
CBD oils are not cheap. Many users therefore try to save money by ordering from questionable dealers. Some also forget that CBD - despite very few side effects - can interact with certain medications.
There are no documented serious side effects when using CBD. The World Health Organization (WHO) also states in its report on CBD that it is not psychoactive, is well tolerated by humans and animals, poses no health risk, and does not cause psychological or physical dependence. (2)
However: CBD is metabolized by the liver. If you are already taking medications that are also metabolized there (e.g., some painkillers), you should be especially careful. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you weigh the risks.
CBD oil is freely available in Germany without a prescription, provided that the THC content is a maximum of 0.2%. Our CBD oils contain 0% THC to completely exclude possible psychoactive effects.
There are now countless CBD product providers on the market. The problem: not all of them are reputable. Quality limitations are not uncommon. Unfortunately, inferior quality CBD products can, in the worst case, be contaminated with chemicals. Cheap oils are also often produced under poor conditions, which not only harms the environment and people but also reduces the quality and effectiveness of the oil.
Another major problem: If the manufacturing process is not well documented and the result is not checked in the laboratory, CBD products can contain ingredients that you don't actually want. Particularly problematic: disproportionately large amounts of psychoactive cannabinoids like THC. This is also the reason why you keep hearing that CBD would make you high.
When choosing your CBD product, therefore, pay particular attention to the origin and purity of your CBD oil. Pay particular attention to:
High-quality extraction methods (such as CO2 extraction)
the quality of the carrier oil (e.g. MCT oil)
a minimal THC content
transparent information on manufacturing and quality as well as laboratory certificates
To ensure the best possible quality and to be able to trace the supply chain of our products, we decided to manufacture entirely in Europe.
CBD oil has long established itself as an effective, natural alternative for pain management. Research and the experiences of affected individuals show: When used correctly, CBD can provide significant relief for both mild and severe pain - without the negative properties and severe side effects of synthetic painkillers.
Particularly positive: CBD is not addictive and, according to the WHO, has no serious side effects. Many pain patients can drastically reduce or completely replace their intake of synthetic painkillers with CBD.
