As they age or due to certain illnesses, many people lose their appetite and often struggle with unwanted weight loss. Their sense of taste diminishes, hunger decreases, and food loses its appeal. At the same time, more and more people are struggling with obesity and the health consequences of excess weight – one of the most common diseases in Germany.
In both cases, CBD can provide natural relief. It can help stimulate appetite in a targeted way, but also prevent cravings. This helps to restore a healthy sense of hunger.
This article examines the scientific background of CBD's effect on hunger, presents current studies, and provides helpful tips on CBD products that can be used specifically to stimulate or curb appetite.

Even if it sounds paradoxical: CBD can both help with weight loss and stimulate appetite. This is probably due to its effect on the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates appetite, among other things.
Unlike psychoactive cannabis (e.g., THC), CBD does not cause the typical cravings ("munchies") that cannabis users often report.
The connection between the ECS and our appetite is not yet fully understood, nor is the influence of CBD on the ECS. What is certain is that CBD promotes relaxation, sleep, and overall well-being, thus helping to naturally regulate appetite.
The properties and interactions of the active ingredient CBD (cannabidiol) with the body are complex and not yet fully understood. However, it is believed to influence the body's own endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors and enzymes found in almost all areas of the body, particularly in the brain and digestive tract. It appears to play an important role in regulating many bodily functions, including general well-being and mood, as well as hunger and appetite.
The endocannabinoid system has two cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2:
CB1 receptors are primarily found in the central nervous system. They influence, among other things, food intake and satiety.
CB2 receptors are primarily found in immune cells. They play a role in inflammatory processes and the regulation of energy balance.
The appetite-stimulating effect known from THC (cravings or "munchies" with cannabis consumption) is primarily due to THC activating the CB1 receptor of the endocannabinoid system. In contrast, CBD does not bind directly to CB1, but rather acts indirectly. It inhibits certain enzymes that break down the body's own endocannabinoids. Studies show that CBD modulates rather than activates CB1 receptors. The overly appetite-stimulating effect, as known from THC, does not occur.
CBD oil and other CBD products show great potential to support weight management. Its interaction with the CB1 receptor of the ECS could help reduce cravings and naturally curb appetite. Additionally, studies show that CBD may block the GPR55 receptor, which stimulates metabolism and thus promotes fat burning.
Furthermore, it is assumed that CBD increases serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, which can affect mood and thus indirectly eating behavior. Serotonin, the "feel-good hormone," is known for its role in appetite regulation: Higher serotonin levels make us feel better and lead to a "healthy" appetite (not too much and not too little), while a lack of the neurotransmitter can lead to "emotional eating."
However, the mechanisms here are highly complex, and the result depends on many individual factors. Currently, comprehensive clinical studies are lacking, so the effect of CBD for weight loss has not yet been proven. At the same time, CBD - always in combination with a change in diet and sufficient exercise - helps to improve well-being and thus facilitate weight loss. In cases of severe obesity, however, you should definitely talk to your doctor before taking CBD.
Those who sleep too little may gain weight. Studies suggest that insufficient sleep duration could increase the risk of obesity. In experiments, sleep deprivation led to increased levels of appetite-stimulating peptides like ghrelin and leptin, which in turn promoted increased food intake. Better sleep, e.g., by taking appropriately dosed CBD sleep oil, can therefore help maintain a healthy weight.

Clinical studies also show the great potential of CBD in patients with loss of appetite. Its use increases appetite – presumably through interaction with the ECS. It is also possible that CBD increases the general well-being of patients, reduces anxiety and tension, and raises serotonin levels.
For instance, a study on cancer patients showed that the combined consumption of the two cannabis plant products, THC and CBD, led to a mild increase in appetite and an overall improvement in quality of life in certain cases. CBD alone had a less direct effect. However, due to its calming and relaxing effect, patients' appetites could still be gently stimulated.
Unlike psychoactive cannabis like THC, which can cause strong cravings for certain foods, CBD oils and other cannabidiol products are not known to cause cravings.
On the contrary: the studies mentioned above suggest that CBD tends to have an appetite-regulating effect – meaning it stimulates or suppresses appetite depending on the situation. Furthermore, CBD is attributed stress-relieving and mood-regulating effects, which in turn could reduce emotional cravings.
However, the desire for food is generally very individual, as is the effect of CBD. It is best to test for yourself which dosage and form of intake yield the best results for you.
Start with a low dosage to see how your body reacts to the CBD oil. Our CBD Classic Spray, for example, is ideal for beginners. Slowly increase the dosage until you notice the desired effect on your appetite.
To suppress appetite: Take CBD oil about 30-60 minutes before a meal to curb appetite and feel full faster.
To stimulate appetite: Here, too, we recommend taking it before a meal to stimulate appetite. Regular intake of CBD can also help you feel generally better and thus experience more hunger and appetite.
Our full-spectrum CBD contains other cannabinoids in addition to CBD, which create the so-called "entourage effect". This effect can enhance the effect and also influence appetite more strongly.
Drops under the tongue (sublingual): Cannabinoids are absorbed directly through the mucous membranes, and the effect occurs relatively quickly (after about 15 to 30 minutes).
As a spray: Effects can also be noticed relatively quickly here. Sprays are often additionally flavored (e.g., Lemon Mint), which can make intake more pleasant, especially for beginners.
Mixed into food or drinks: Here, it takes longer for effects to be felt, but the effect usually lasts longer. This method is suitable if you want a slower and longer-lasting effect or if you don't like taking it as an oil or spray.
Generally, if you want to regulate your appetite long-term and, for example, sustainably support weight gain or loss, you should take CBD regularly over a longer period. CBD is better absorbed by the body with regular use, and the effect on appetite can stabilize better over a longer period.
Compared to THC, which can have more serious consequences for your physical and mental health in addition to cravings, CBD has very few side effects. According to the WHO, it is not addictive, not harmful to health, and has high therapeutic potential.
If side effects such as fatigue, diarrhea, dry mouth, or nausea occur, they are usually very mild and quickly subside after adjusting the dosage. If you are taking other medications or are particularly sensitive, please consult your doctor before taking it.
Our feeling of hunger and appetite are complex processes influenced by various factors. Many questions remain unanswered, including the connection between the active ingredient cannabidiol (CBD) and the body's own endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Nevertheless, numerous studies and anecdotal reports show that CBD oil helps with relaxation and can alleviate stress and anxiety. This helps to restore a natural feeling of appetite and hunger.
