Tinnitus affects millions of people worldwide. Most sufferers describe the phenomenon as a constant ringing or buzzing in the ear, but other sound sensations are also possible.

The causes of tinnitus are very diverse, ranging from stress and high noise levels to neurological problems. Since tinnitus is currently considered incurable, many sufferers are looking for alternative ways to alleviate their symptoms. A promising approach is the use of CBD oil.

But what does research say about this? How can CBD help in the treatment of tinnitus, and are there concerns about side effects or addiction? This article provides an overview!

The most important things at a glance

Cannabidiol (CBD), an active ingredient from the cannabis plant, can help tinnitus patients by reducing anxiety and stress.

The effect may even go further, as studies suggest that CBD acts on the endocannabinoid system. This, in turn, could influence typical tinnitus symptoms.

Users also report positive effects of CBD intake for tinnitus, which goes beyond the placebo effect.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus (formerly often called "ringing in the ears") is a subjectively perceived sound. Sufferers hear something without there actually being an external sound source. The perception varies greatly: some hear a constant hum, whistle, or beep, others a pulsating noise. This condition is not only mentally very stressful for those affected - it can also have an impact on physical health because sleep and concentration are impaired.

The exact mechanisms responsible for tinnitus are not yet fully understood. However, scientists suspect that neuronal dysfunctions in the brain or in the auditory system play a role. Since cannabidiol (CBD) has a calming effect and possibly even a greater influence on the nervous system, research is showing great interest in CBD as a means of treating tinnitus symptoms.

CBD in the fight against Tinnitus

Stress Reduction through CBD

Stress and anxiety are considered common triggers or intensifiers of tinnitus. The stress-reducing and anxiolytic effects of CBD have been extensively researched. The main reason for this is the interaction of CBD with the 5HT-1A receptor and the CB1 receptor in the brain, which are closely linked to mood regulation. The results are generally very promising, although further research is still needed.¹

Users also report that CBD reduces stress and anxiety, and that long-term use of CBD makes them generally more relaxed, calmer, and composed, which in turn has a positive effect on their ear noises.

Neuroprotective Properties of CBD

Researchers have also found that CBD can have neuroprotective effects because, for example, it reduces inflammation and has antioxidant properties. This can have a positive effect on inflammation in the nervous system and bring long-term help for neurological diseases.²

Since tinnitus is often associated with a malfunction of neuronal signal transmission in the brain, CBD is also a candidate as an active ingredient against the distressing ear noises.

Studies on CBD and Tinnitus

So far, there is relatively little concrete research on CBD for combating classic tinnitus symptoms. Nevertheless, some studies suggest that there is great potential for treatment options here:

  1. Animal Model: A 2015 study published in the journal Frontiers in Neurology investigated the effect of CBD on the central nervous system in rats with noise-induced tinnitus. The researchers found that CBD appears to reduce neuronal hyperactivity in the auditory center.³

  2. Pain Relief and Relaxation: Tinnitus is often accompanied by chronic pain, especially in patients suffering from migraines or neck pain. A study in the European Journal of Pain (2020) showed that CBD can relieve inflammation-related pain, which in turn could indirectly reduce the burden of tinnitus.⁴

  3. Sleep Improvement: A study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (2019) showed that CBD can improve sleep disturbances, which often accompany tinnitus. Better sleep quality can help reduce the perception of tinnitus sounds.⁵

Concerns of users: Is CBD safe?

Can CBD be addictive?

We are often asked whether CBD is addictive. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CBD has no addictive potential. This distinguishes it significantly from THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis, which carries a risk of addiction at higher doses.

Does CBD get you high?

Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, so it does not cause a "high." Instead, CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors (mainly CB1 and CB2 receptors) that regulates important functions such as pain perception, sleep, mood, and stress perception.

Side effects of CBD

CBD is generally well-tolerated, but side effects can occur, especially at high doses. The most common side effects include:

  • Fatigue

  • Dry mouth

  • Dizziness

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort

If you experience side effects, reduce the dosage and, if in doubt, consult your doctor. We also recommend starting with a low dosage and gradually increasing it until you find the ideal dose for you.

Interactions with medication

CBD can affect the action of certain medications, especially those processed by the liver (e.g., blood thinners or antidepressants). If you are already taking medication, you should consult a doctor before taking CBD.

Quality and purity

Especially with over-the-counter CBD, there is often concern about getting low-quality products. At Hanfgeflüster, you only get certified CBD products of the highest quality. We constantly check for possible contaminants and guarantee a THC content of less than 0.2%.

CBD on prescription?

In Germany, CBD oil without THC is generally available without a prescription as long as the THC content is below 0.2%. These products do not fall under the Narcotics Act and can be legally purchased. A prescription is not required in these cases.

Medical cannabis, on the other hand, can only be prescribed by a GP or ENT specialist if severe symptoms are present and other therapies have not been successful. Tinnitus is generally not one of the conditions for which medical cannabis is prescribed.

Users report that even low-dose CBD can achieve good results in the treatment of tinnitus. We recommend that you only buy high-quality products from reputable sources to achieve the best possible effect and reduce side effects.

CBD for Tinnitus: Administration and Dosage

CBD is available in various forms that can be individually tailored to the needs of those affected. The most popular forms of administration are:

  1. CBD oil
CBD oil is taken orally and acts systemically throughout the body. For tinnitus, this form of administration is a good choice because CBD is quickly absorbed and can be precisely dosed. You typically take CBD oil by placing a few drops under your tongue.

  2. CBD sprays
CBD sprays are sprayed directly onto the oral mucosa and are also quickly absorbed by the body. This form is particularly suitable for people who do not like taking drops or for on-the-go use. Our aroma oils, such as the Golden CBD Oil, are also great for anyone who doesn't like the typical hemp taste.

  3. Topical products
Less common for tinnitus, but still effective: topical CBD products like our new, warming CBD balm can be applied to the neck or temples to relieve tension or pain often associated with tinnitus.

How to integrate CBD into your daily routine

To relieve the symptoms of tinnitus long-term, we recommend using CBD for an extended period. Start with a low dosage (a few drops, low CBD content) and gradually increase until you achieve the desired effect.

We recommend starting with 5–10 mg per day and gradually increasing the dosage. Taking it daily at the same time can help achieve consistent results. You should also be patient: while tinnitus often comes on very suddenly, it can take some time for symptoms to improve.

CBD as a remedy for tinnitus symptoms?

Even though tinnitus remains incurable, research suggests that CBD can provide relief to affected individuals, particularly through its calming, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory effects. It can also help improve the quality of life for those affected by positively influencing sleep, stress, and anxiety.

CBD is certainly not a miracle cure, but a promising and, above all, natural supplement that has the potential to significantly improve the lives of tinnitus sufferers. However, always remember to consult your doctor if in doubt, especially if you are already taking medication.
