Neuropathic pain is one of the most challenging forms of chronic pain. It arises from nerve damage or nervous system dysfunction and is characterized by persistent symptoms such as burning, stinging, or numbness. This type of pain often responds poorly to conventional pain relievers, leading many sufferers to seek alternative therapies.
Studies show that CBD can be very effective in alleviating neuropathic pain. We explain how CBD can work for nerve pain, how it can be optimally used in pain management, and what patients should definitely consider when using it.

Pain patients have long reported that their pain symptoms can be alleviated by taking CBD - now research confirms this.
CBD has anti-inflammatory effects, which is probably the main cause of pain relief. Additionally, it has a relaxing effect and enhances well-being, which in turn can positively influence pain perception.
CBD can also have a direct pain-relieving effect through its interaction with the endocannabinoid system. However, more research is needed here.

Products derived from the hemp plant have been used in medicine for millennia. Modern research, however, was slow to examine cannabis more closely. Especially after cannabis was classified as a narcotic in 1961, its medical use was severely restricted. Only the isolation of the active ingredients THC and CBD (cannabidiol) in the 1960s and the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s initiated new scientific interest.
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is found in the brain and nervous system of all mammals. Cannabinoids like CBD bind to various receptors in the ECS and can thus influence various bodily functions.
While the so-called CB1 receptors are primarily active in the central nervous system and influence pain, appetite, and mood, CB2 receptors primarily act in the immune system and are involved in anti-inflammatory processes.
The interaction of CBD with these receptors is considered one of the central reasons for its effect on nerve pain and other symptoms and is being investigated with great interest.
Since 2017, doctors in Germany have been able to prescribe cannabis products. However, this approval deviates from the strict standards of evidence-based medicine: Instead of clearly defined indications, the decision lies with the treating physician as to whether cannabis is suitable for a patient. However, doctors do not always acknowledge their patients' pain, or they continue to rely on classic pain relievers for treatment - even though many people report that these do not provide sufficient relief for nerve pain.
In contrast to THC, which is available in Germany for good reason only by prescription, CBD is very mild and has few side effects, making it fundamentally suitable for self-treatment.
Current studies underscore the potential of CBD (cannabidiol) in the treatment of neuropathic pain. A recent review paper analyzed randomized, placebo-controlled studies and showed that CBD brought about significant pain reductions compared to placebos.¹

Another study investigated how the signaling pathways of CB1 cannabinoid, TRPV1 vanilloid, and NMDA glutamate receptors in the brain interact to regulate the symptoms of neuropathic pain. Researchers showed that the interaction of these receptors plays a key role in pain perception. The possible influence of CBD on the body's own cannabinoid receptors could therefore represent a promising approach for the treatment of neuropathic pain.²
Despite all the euphoria, researchers repeatedly point out that more clinical studies with larger samples and isolated CBD are needed to better understand long-term effects and potential interactions.
Nevertheless: The results strengthen CBD's position as a possible alternative to medications like opioids, which are often associated with significant side effects or addiction risks.

Even though CBD is generally described as having very few side effects, undesirable effects can still occur.
The most common side effects include fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. In some cases, interactions with other medications can also occur, particularly with those that affect the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, which is responsible for the metabolism of many drugs. Further reports suggest mild gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea.
It is particularly important here to gradually approach the individually well-tolerated dosage. Start with just a few drops of hemp oil per day and slowly increase until you achieve the desired effect. If you are taking other medications, please consult your doctor beforehand.
Important: In contrast to THC, which is also derived from the cannabis plant, cannabidiol has no psychoactive effect and is not addictive. Therefore, in low to medium doses (less than 0.2% THC), it is not prescription-only.
Usually, a few drops of CBD oil are placed under the tongue for oral use. The active ingredient is absorbed through the oral mucosa, leading to a quicker onset of action.
However, since the use of CBD as a classic oil is not as comfortable for some people - for example, because they don't like the taste - we have developed special products. Our CBD mint oil, for instance, balances the intense hemp taste with natural mint oil. Additionally, the mint oil can help alleviate mild side effects in the initial phase, such as nausea.
For acute nerve pain, it is also recommended to use higher-dosed 15% CBD oil or cream to rub into the painful areas. The gentle massage also promotes relaxation, thereby enhancing the effect of CBD.
In addition to CBD treatment, there are various alternative or complementary measures that can help alleviate neuropathic pain:
Cannabinoids like CBD are central to the hope for treating neuropathic pain. The application possibilities are diverse, and side effects are very low. Although the study situation is not yet clear, many study results nevertheless indicate the high therapeutic benefit of cannabinoids. For patients who find conventional therapies insufficient, CBD products can therefore be an important supplement.
