CBD for Herniated Discs - Can Cannabinoids Protect the Spine?

Back pain: How it arises

Back problems can have many different causes. The most common are muscle tension due to poor posture and stress, e.g., from prolonged sitting in the office and lack of exercise. With increasing age, wear and tear on the spine also occurs, which can cause pain. However, injuries or inflammation of the spine or congenital deformities (scoliosis) can also be causes of the discomfort.

How does a slipped disc occur?

A slipped disc occurs when the intervertebral discs, which act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, are damaged. This damage can cause the soft, gelatinous nucleus (nucleus pulposus) to protrude through the outer fibrous ring (anulus fibrosus) of the disc. A slipped disc often causes severe pain, numbness, or tingling in the extremities. In severe cases, motor impairments can also occur.

The causes of slipped discs are varied, but similar to those of other back problems:

1. Wear and tear (degenerative changes)

With increasing age, the intervertebral discs lose elasticity and moisture. This causes the discs to become more brittle and susceptible to tears. Such degenerative processes are the most common cause of a slipped disc.

2. Overload and incorrect loading

  • Heavy physical work: Frequent lifting and carrying of heavy loads, especially with incorrect technique, puts extreme strain on the intervertebral discs.

  • Poor posture: Prolonged sitting in a bad posture or unilateral movements can overstress the intervertebral discs.

  • Sports activities: Heavy loads from sports such as weightlifting or contact sports can damage the intervertebral discs, especially if the muscles are not sufficiently trained.

7. Lack of Exercise

A lack of exercise can impair blood circulation to the intervertebral discs, making their regeneration more difficult. In addition, a lack of exercise often leads to weak muscles, increasing susceptibility to back problems and slipped discs.

CBD vs. Painkillers

Pain treatment for a slipped disc can vary greatly, depending on the severity of the symptoms and whether nerves may have been affected.

There is much to suggest that CBD could generally be effective against pain. The main reason for this is the interaction of CBD with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network in the body that is involved in regulating pain, inflammation, and other physiological processes.

CBD indirectly influences the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the ECS, which can reduce the transmission of pain signals and inhibit inflammatory reactions. Studies¹ suggest that CBD is particularly effective for chronic pain, such as that caused by arthritis, back pain, or nerve damage.

Side Effects of CBD

In general, the use of CBD is associated with very few side effects. While long-term use of conventional painkillers can often lead to stomach problems, liver damage, or dependencies, no such negative consequences are known for CBD.² However, long-term studies are needed here to assess all effects.

However, it is clear: unlike THC, which is also derived from the cannabis plant, CBD is not addictive and does not cause intoxication. Regular, varied exercise, strengthening the core muscles, possibly weight loss, an ergonomic sitting posture, and avoiding heavy loads have generally proven effective. CBD is an ideal companion for these approaches and should always be combined with them.
